Set in beautiful, rural Northumberland the 1 1/2 acre garden, with a sheltering early 19th century brick wall has been developed from scratch by Heather and John Russell over the last 25 years.
Heather has created a rich pattern of plant tapestries and garden features each with a character and mood of their own but which blend seamlessly into one another. The space here has been used most inventively and it is a garden packed with new ideas. Heather has combined passionate plantsmanship with a very strong sense of design in a delightfully contemporary garden. Strong structure provided by clipped trees and bushes and shrubs with gravel areas, naturalistic planting using different grasses and perennials, many unusual. There is a large collection of group three clematis, mostly viticellas, and generously planted, coloured themed borders.
The main walled area of the garden, was laid out when Bolam Hall was built in the early 19th century, surrounded by parkland. This was derelict when the Russells bought it in 1982.
